Renewable energy company Drax has launched a new sustainability framework.
The sustainability framework:
The company collaborated with its key stakeholders to develop the framework.
It aligns with Drax’s goal to achieve net-zero by the end of 2040 across its value chain, including people, the environment, and the climate.
The framework comprises 26 precise, quantifiable, and time-bound goals to enable the company to better engage with biodiversity, forestry, emissions reduction, water efficiency, and supporting local communities.
Focus areas:
Drax aims to provide green skills and STEM education to underprivileged communities, automate digital data collection for supply chain traceability, implement nature-positive action plans by 2030, research carbon removal projects, improve biodiversity, and prioritize health and safety for all employees. One of the goals is to represent underprivileged communities and promote ecosystem resilience.
Roadmap to 2040:
One of the key components of Drax is its goal to achieve net-zero throughout its value chain by the end of 2040.
This includes actions to decarbonize its supply chains for low-carbon delivery of biomass fiber to the Drax Power Station and the advance of renewable energy sources for its pellet plants.
The company consulted with stakeholders, including members of the scientific community, academia, the workforce, investors, and eNGOs (environmental non-governmental organizations).
Thought leadership:
Miguel Veiga-Pestana, Drax Group Chief Sustainability Officer, said, “This launch is not the end of the process. It is just the start. In the coming months and years, the climate crisis will become more acute. The need for action will become greater, and the role of carbon removals will become even more important. That means we will have to work even harder to aim to ensure our operations help reduce humanity’s impact on the planet.”
