Kenya: A Success Story in the Transition to Renewable Energy

Kenya’s RE success story

Kenya is at the forefront of Africa’s renewable energy revolution producing more than 90% of its electricity from sustainable sources. It is the largest geothermal energy producer in Africa, with over 900 MW of installed capacity, and is home to the 310 MW Lake Turkana Wind Project, the largest in Africa.

The country’s investment in large-scale solar farms, such as the Garissa and Alten Solar Power Plants, further strengthens its renewable energy sector. It’s bold ambition to reach 100% clean energy by 2030 makes it a model for the rest of the continent.

The Path Forward: What Africa Must Do Next

Approximately 600 million people in sub-Saharan Africa still lack access to electricity, accounting for about 43% of the region’s population. In January this year, Tanzania hosted the Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit in Dar es Salaam, bringing together 53 African heads of state, investors, and international organizations to address the continent’s energy challenges.

The summit aimed to accelerate energy access for 300 million Africans by 2030, a goal that requires substantial investment and policy reforms. The initiative seeks to mobilize at least $90 billion from multilateral development banks, private businesses, and other sources to expand and rehabilitate electricity grids, integrate renewable energy, and create new job opportunities.

For Africa to fully harness its renewable energy potential, bold action is needed through:

  1. Increasing clean energy investments – Governments and investors must scale up funding for clean energy projects.
  2. Expansion of climate-friendly policies – Phasing out fossil fuel subsidies and offering incentives for green technology will accelerate the transition.
  3. Strengthening power infrastructure – Upgrading grids and developing regional energy-sharing networks will improve renewable energy distribution.
  4. Promoting green job training – Investing in renewable energy education and workforce training will help create millions of skilled jobs in energy.

This is Africa’s moment to lead the global energy transition. The transition to renewable energy is no longer a choice but an urgent necessity. With climate change intensifying and energy demand soaring, Africa must seize this moment to transform its energy landscape.

By investing in clean energy, reducing emissions, and creating green jobs, Africa will not only fight climate change but also secure long-term economic prosperity. The time to act is now. The future of Africa and the planet depends on it.
