Chennai, the New Green Lung: A City’s Commitment to Sustainability

Chennai, a city that has always held a special place in my heart, has undergone a remarkable transformation over the years.

I’ve had the distinct pleasure of watching Chennai evolve, first as a student in the 90s, a journalist in the 2000s, and then as a corporate professional in the 2010s. I have been a frequent visitor since.

Over the years, I’ve witnessed its evolution firsthand. The transformation is palpable.

As a student in the 90s, I remember a city grappling with rapid growth. The roads were often congested, and the infrastructure was strained. Fast forward to the 2000s, when I worked as a journalist, and the city was starting to modernize. New flyovers and roads were being built, and public transportation was improving.

Infrastructure:

My recent visit to the city was a delightful surprise. I could easily navigate through the city, thanks to the efficient public transportation system and well-maintained roads. The construction of new metro lines has further eased the burden on the roads, reducing traffic congestion. The quality of roads has improved dramatically, reducing travel time and improving safety.

All the same, the sustainability journalist in me could not help by marvel at the amazing sustainable strides taken by the city. In the last decade and a half (ever since I visited the city for corporate engagements), I have witnessed the city’s growing focus on sustainability.

The Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers Association, where I worked, was at the forefront of renewable energy initiatives. This shift towards cleaner energy sources has undoubtedly contributed to Chennai’s improved air quality.

Waste management:

One of the most striking changes is the city’s cleanliness. The once ubiquitous sight of overflowing garbage bins is now rare. The authorities seem to have implemented effective waste management strategies, resulting in cleaner streets and a more pleasant environment.

Public restrooms:

The availability of public restrooms is another significant improvement. This basic amenity, often neglected in many Indian cities—now readily accessible in Chennai, has a significant impact on the overall quality of life in a city.

Green transformation:

Perhaps the most impressive green transformation is the city’s growing green cover. The saplings planted decades ago have matured into lush trees, providing much-needed shade and improving air quality. The city’s parks and green spaces are now more vibrant and inviting. Areas like Saidapet are now veritable green urban jungles, a testament to the city’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

All the same, the city has a lot of challenges, especially during the monsoons. This is because of the lack of drainages, an area which needs further focus and work.

Chennai’s journey is a testament to the power of thoughtful planning and execution. By prioritizing infrastructure development, sustainability, and citizen welfare, the city has emerged as a model for urban development in India. As we grapple with the challenges of climate change and rapid urbanization, Chennai can be seen as an example with valuable lessons.

Our take —- Plan well:

A well planned city can improve the situation for the future generation. Urban planners, especially the urban planning department in the municipal corporation and the state government, has the power to stop ad hoc infrastructure growth, and streamline sustainable growth practices.

The rest of India must act now… Chennai is leading by example.

DECIDE, ACT AND MAKE THE FUTURE GREEN!
