GMR Airports Limited (formerly GMR Airports Infrastructure Limited), the largest airport operator in India, has joined the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), the world’s largest corporate sustainability initiative.
GMR Airports has pledged to align its strategies and operations with the Ten Principles of the UNGC, which focus on human rights, labor, environment, and anti-corruption, to advance the sustainable development goals (SDGs).
The initiative underscores GMR Airports’ commitment to embedding sustainability across its operations, fostering innovation, and driving positive change for communities and the planet.
Building a sustainable future for aviation:
As one of the foremost airport operators in India and globally, GMR Airports has consistently led by example in advancing sustainability in aviation, aligning itself with the SDGs and India’s national priorities.
All GMR’s airports are green buildings certified by the US Green Building Council (USGBC) or the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), ensuring sustainable practices from the design phase itself.
The company is actively advancing climate action by pursuing carbon neutrality and net zero emissions through energy-efficient systems, renewable energy adoption, and low-carbon technologies. Its operations prioritize sustainable infrastructure with initiatives like rainwater harvesting, wastewater recycling, and circular waste management.
Through the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation, the GMR Group has positively impacted over a million lives in the past decade by promoting education, skill development, and healthcare, and fostering social equity and economic empowerment. Guided by robust governance frameworks, GMR Airports upholds ethical business practices, integrity, and transparency, positioning itself as a catalyst in sustainable aviation.
Thought leadership:
Mr. Kiran Kumar Grandhi, CEO & MD, GMR Airports Limited, said, “Joining the UN Global Compact marks a pivotal step in our journey towards becoming a global leader in sustainable aviation. As an organization deeply rooted in sustainability, this commitment reinforces our responsibility to create resilient airports that not only connect communities but also protect our planet. By aligning with the UNGC’s principles and the SDGs, we aim to inspire transformative change across our industry.”
This partnership with the UNGC is a reflection of GMR Airports’ commitment to embedding environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles into its DNA, ensuring that the growth of aviation is not just sustainable but also inclusive and equitable, the company said in a press release.
