How is AI Transforming the Indian Legal Landscape?

181 0

India’s judiciary and law enforcement are undergoing a digital transformation, with AI driving a shift in efficiency, accessibility, and decision-making.

The Indian legal system is a crucial social component of ESG, governing corporate policies, protecting citizens, and ensuring social justice through regulations and policies in the country.

AI-powered technologies like machine learning (ML), natural language processing (NLP), optical character recognition (OCR), and predictive analytics are being used to automate administrative tasks, improve case tracking, and enhance crime prevention.

For example, AI applications in e-courts include automated case management, legal research and documentation, AI-assisted filing and court procedures, user assistance and chatbots, and predictive analysis in case outcomes. The technology is making processes faster, smarter, and more transparent.

The government of India has allocated Rs 7210 crore for the e-Courts Phase III project, with Rs 53.57 crore specifically earmarked for the integration of AI and blockchain technologies across the high courts.

AI-driven legal translation tools are being deployed to make legal documents and judgments accessible for non-English-speaking litigants. AI is also being integrated into policing and law enforcement to enhance crime detection, surveillance, and criminal investigations.

The Vimarsh 2023 5G Hackathon showcased some key AI-driven applications. These included innovations for crime prevention, including AI-assisted FIR filing using voice recognition, drone-based crime surveillance and suspect tracking, augmented reality (AR) applications for crime scene investigations, and AI-driven predictive analytics for national security and policing.

With sustained government investment and regulatory oversight, AI has the potential to make India’s justice system faster, more accessible, and transparent for all citizens.
