India has reached a significant solar energy milestone by achieving 100 GW of installed capacity. Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi pointed out that this underscores the nation’s commitment to a greener future and brings it closer to its ambitious goal of 500 GW of RE by 2030.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Modi, India’s energy journey over the past ten years has been historic and inspiring,” said Minister Joshi. He highlighted initiatives like solar parks and rooftop solar projects as key drivers of this transformation, adding, “In the field of green energy, India is not only becoming self-reliant but is also showing the world a new path.”

The PM SuryaGhar Muft Bijli Yojana has made rooftop solar a widespread reality, empowering households with clean energy.

The solar energy sector has grown by 3450% since 2014, rising from a mere 2.82 GW to the current 100.33 GW as of January 31, 2025.

A snapshot

Solar Capacity:

  • Commissioned: 100.33 GW
  • Under Implementation: 84.10 GW
  • Tender Issued and LoA to be Issued: 47.49 GW
  • Total Solar pipeline: 231.91 GW

Hybrid/RTC Projects:

  • Under Implementation: 39.78 GW
  • Tender Issued and LoA to be Issued: 24.90 GW
  • Total Hybrid (Under Implementation & Tendered): 64.67 GW

Total (Solar + Hybrid): 296.59 GW

Solar energy now accounts for 47% of the total RE installed capacity. In 2024 alone, 24.5 GW of solar energy was added, which is more than double the previous year’s installations. Utility-scale solar installations reached 18.5 GW, a nearly threefold increase. States like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh have been instrumental in this growth.

Rooftop solar also saw significant expansion, with 4.59 GW of new capacity installed in 2024, a 53% jump from 2023. The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana has been a major catalyst, nearing 9 lakh rooftop solar installations.

India has also made substantial progress in solar manufacturing. From a modest 2 GW capacity in 2014, the nation now boasts 60 GW, positioning itself as a global leader. The target is to reach 100 GW of solar module production by 2030.

The 100 GW solar energy milestone is a significant moment in India’s energy transition journey. This showcases the country’s commitment to clean, sustainable, and affordable energy.
