2 0

The Aziz Akhannouch-led A Moroccan government committee has greenlighted six green hydrogen projects in southern regions, collectively valued at $32.5 billion.

The country aims to increase its renewable energy capacity to 52% by 2030 and establish itself as a significant hydrogen supplier in the EU.

The company has selected Emirati company Taqa, Spanish company Cepsa, Moroccan company Nareva, Saudi company ACWA Power, and Chinese companies UEG and China Three Gorges for production of green ammonia, steel, and fuel.

The six projects, including the green hydrogen sector development agreement signed with King Mohammed VI and French President Macron, are part of two agreements involving Morocco and Total Energies and a joint development between the Office Chérifien des Phosphates and ENGIE.

Each project will receive up to 30,000 hectares of land upon signing preliminary agreements. Morocco plans to supply 10 million tons of renewable hydrogen to the EU by 2030, aligning with the European Green Deal’s goal of meeting domestic energy goals.

The Head of Government stated that the Moroccan government is implementing the “Morocco offer” in green hydrogen, in line with the High Royal Directives from July 29, 2023, to enhance the country’s green hydrogen assets and respond to global investors’ projects.

The meeting was attended by Mr. Abdelouafi Laftit, Minister of the Interior; Mr. Nizar Baraka, Minister of Equipment and Water; Mr. Ryad Mezzour, Minister of Industry and Trade; Mr. Karim Zidane, Minister Delegate to the Head of Government, in charge of Investment, Convergence, and Evaluation of Public Policies; Mr. Fouzi Lekjaa, Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance, in charge of the Budget; and Mr. Tarik Moufaddal, Chairman and CEO of MASEN.
