India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) showcased a tableau at the 76th Republic Day Parade in New Delhi, focusing on renewable energy.
The tableau highlighted India’s commitment to achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel-based energy capacity by 2030.
The front part of the tableau featured solar energy initiatives like PM Suryaghar Muft Bijli Yojana, the world’s largest residential rooftop solar initiative, and India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission.
The four green-coloured wind turbines on the tableau marked India’s position as the 4th-largest installer of non-fossil fuel energy capacity worldwide.
In the second development, the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) and The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish a center of excellence for energy transition (CoEET) in Hyderabad.
The CoEET will be housed at TERI’s Institute of Energy Transition (IoET) and will focus on research, innovation, and capacity-building in energy transition technologies and policies.
It will conduct comprehensive research across various sectors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve energy efficiency, and promote the adoption of low-carbon technologies.
It will also support the formulation of policy and regulatory recommendations for building codes, energy performance standards, and appliance labeling, promoting circular economy practices and integrating advanced technologies.
The CoEET will contribute to enhancing energy efficiency in power generation, transmission, and distribution systems to minimize losses and support India’s energy security goals.
Manohar Lal Khattar, Minister of Power and Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, said, “The Center of Excellence for Energy Transition is a bold and transformative initiative that underscores India’s commitment to achieving sustainable development goals. By fostering cutting-edge research, collaboration, and innovation, the Centre will act as a catalyst for clean energy adoption, enabling us to lead the global transition to a low-carbon economy. This partnership between BEE and TERI sets a benchmark for future collaborations in the energy sector.”
Thirdly, the Government of Madhya Pradesh’s support and UNDP (technical support) conducted a workshop on capacity building.
The workshop on Monitoring Frameworks of Sustainable Development Goals, Compilation of Environment Accounts, and Gender Statistics,’ provided insights into India’s progress in environmental economic accounting and gender statistics.
The session highlighted the importance of state involvement in driving progress in these areas and shared best practices from Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. The session also highlighted the significance of gender-disaggregated data and statistics for achieving equality and equity.
