The Ministry of Power has issued guidelines for the installation and operation of battery swapping and charging stations for electric vehicles (EVs).
These guidelines aim to meet the requirements of EVs with integrated batteries, which can be powered through swappable batteries that can be charged separately at dedicated battery charging stations.
Battery swapping is a method of quickly replacing an EV’s fully or partially discharged battery with a charged one. The guidelines govern such battery charging systems and are applicable to swappable battery providers, owners, and operators of battery charging stations and battery swapping stations located anywhere.
The main objectives of these guidelines are to promote swapping of batteries as an alternate method of powering EVs, promote battery-as-a-service, and develop a battery swapping ecosystem.
The guidelines also apply to battery charging stations, battery swapping stations, and battery providers and provide provisions relating to safety. Owners of BCS or BSS are permitted to use an existing electricity connection for charging the swappable batteries.
